GPX Editor App Reviews
1) not found how to remove the damn rectangle around the track 2) not found how to change track line color and style 3) not found how to export the map with the track to a PNG file
Addition to my old review: The developer is very cooperative and added a lots of useful features in the new version. The added compatibility to OpenStreetMaps I like best. Thanks a lot for the big improvement. Old review: When I am hiking or skiing in austria, italy or somewhere else I really like to record my tracks using the iPhone (or any other handheld GPS device). It is great for sharing the track with friends or just showing them what I have done. The issue is, at the end of the week you have about hundreds of gps tracks and you need to edit and organize them. Now GPX Editor comes in. It allowes to import gpx files (tracks, waypoints, routes) and allows to merge them. It is also perfect for planning a hike or an adventure. What needs to be improved: - User should be able to assign colors to tracks - user should be able to assign a custom icon to a waypoint, track, route - Start and destination of a track should be visible (e.g. by flags) - possibility to use OpenStreetMaps in addition to Apple Maps All in all I really enjoy using the app and it does what it should do.
I’m very pleased with this software. It’s proving super useful when planning camping trips. I can make up a map with routes, and waypoints super quickly and shre it with a group of people. Also makes editing trip logs really easy. Thanks.
This app may be ok if you are creating or editing very simplistic GPX files. The first time I opened the app I had to force quit (spinning beach ball of death). Upon the 2nd opening I did manage to open one of my smaller GPX files with a number of trails (after watching the beach ball for over a minute) but zooming, panning and selecting trails frequently locks while the beach ball spins making the app unusable. It’s a bit shocking how slow and frustrating the app is to attempt to use running on a top of the line (2015) iMac Rentia i7. If you are considering this app be aware that you will likely need to restrict use to very small single trail GPX files. Also found that I was unable to select trails in order to attempt to export a single trail. Selecting trails segments in the list boxes doesn’t position the view window either so if the performance wasn’t a show-stopper the UI functionatility may be an issue as well. Hopefully the app developer will work on the peformance issues. Meanwhile I’ll have to search elsewhere to edit GPX files.
Yes you can open, edit and save GPX files but there’s no routing between the waypoints just straight lines. Sending to Apple Maps doesn’t really help in this case. I’ll update my review if I find this application to actually provide some basic functionality.
I purchased this software for a use it was not particularly intended for: creating .gpx files from scratch to be imported into my Goldwing motorcycle’s built-in (Garmin) GPS for backroads touring. Most times, if you allow a GPS to provide your routing, it may offer the most efficient route, but not necessarily the most scenic or enjoyable one. In an effort to minimze my superslab (interstate highways) travel, I usually prefer to plan routes for their enjoyment, not how quickly I can get somewhere. I’ve used an online trip planner and mapping tool (web-based) in the past to generate routes and save them to a .gpx file for use on the bike, but it always seemed to be much more of a struggle than it should have been, regardless of which browser I tried. Though, admittedly, my initial attempt at using GPX Editor for this task was not completely successful, it was the most user-friendly and intuitive software I had tried to-date for this purpose. Initially I would have only given this a three stars rating based on the app’s capabilities for ‘my’ intended use, though it should have rated higher than that for most users who are importing GPX track files from an actual GPS unit. Then I contacted the developer, Bill, and my mental tally for this app’s rating immediately increased to a four. At the moment, I cannot recall more helpful and timely responses from a software developer, and I write this as someone who’s been running a full-time Mac consulting practice for seventeen years now! In only four days, which to me is amazing, the features (software functions) that I needed to make this app useful for my intended purpose have already been implemented! I very rarely write reviews, but have been so impressed with this easy and inexpensive solution to a problem that used to take some of the joy out of planning Moto trips w/GPS routings, that I had to offer this review. Yes, it’s a niche product with limited purpose, but for what it does, and considering the developer’s concern for assisting his customers, I have to give GPX Editor FIVE STARS. Keep up the good work!
I am not a novice with computers, but I am very much a novice with making your own way with GPS. As such, I got in trouble right away with GPX. Bill Mosesitt was quick to help me out. As one of the reviewers of the previous edition said “ We’re punching above our wight class here”. I look forward to an enjoyable relationship with Bill’s product.
I’m a contributor to an off road trail mapping site and this application works perfectly to cleanup extraneous track points, adjust waypoints, and add metadata to GPX files. That said, it’s not entirely intuituve to use, the interface could use some improvements, and having more basemap options would be nice. However, the value is excellent, it is well worth the price!
I haven’t left a review for an APP before until now. I have been fighting with Basecamp to edit a GPX file and add some Waypoints. It seemed to have trouble finding the address I wanted to add as a Waypoint. I also use the routeconverter.de website Java app which has always worked well. With that, I was able to search the address and add the waypoint but I had trouble editing the name / description. Within 5 mins of downloloading this app, I had several new Waypoints added to my GPX file and a readable name assigned to each one. Displaying the GPX works well and I can step through each Track easily. Great App !
Program is difficult to use and requires internet service to update route changes. Starting a route from a location other than present location is impossible. It would be great to download competed map and plan route changes where internet service is not available. A compass rose to provide magnetic heading within 0ne degree would be nice. Could be a great program, but missing basic navigation tools.
This app is nearly everything I want in a GPX editor. A good choice of variosu OpenStreetMap versions (and the requisite Apple Maps), ability to easily view and edit tracks, waypoints, and routes. You can easily edit, delete or add all of these at will, including individual points within. Combining or splitting tracks and GPX files is also very easy. Overall a terrific app.
Update (Feb 2016): GPX Editor just keeps getting better. Since last year the developer has added every GPX feature that I need for my mountain biking adventures into this single tool. Here’s my workflow: 0) Download GPX files from Trailforks.com or MTBProject.com (you must be logged in at either site to see the GPX download link). 1) Import the downloaded GPX tracks (File -> Import From File…). 2) Double-click on the “Number” field for each Track and assign each of them a number in ascending order. I like to leave a few gaps between my numbers (1, 5, 10, 15, 20) so that I can easily rearrange or add tracks later on without renumbering all of them when I add a single track. 3) Sort the tracks by the “Number” field by clicking on the “Number” heading. 4) Check the direction of each Track by selecting the track and then selecting the first track point to see if the track needs to be reversed in order to connect to the previous track in the proper direction (GPX -> Reverse Track Points). The last point of the previous track should connect to the first point of the next track. 4.1) Delete unnecessary points at the beginning or end of a track by zooming in on the map and selecting the first point that you don’t want by clicking it on the map (it will now be highlighted in the Track Points list on the bottom right). Now scroll up or down in the Track points list and hold down Shift while clicking on the last point that you don’t want. This will select all of the points between those two points, and now you can click the “-“ button to remove all of them. 4.2) Add points to extend a track by using Shift+Click on the map. You can also create a new track in the Track list using the “+” button and then Shift+Click to add any points you want. This is useful for connecting trails together using a route you create on your own. Make sure to Number your new track so that it’s in the proper order with the tracks you imported earlier. 5) Combine all of the Tracks into a single Track by selecting all of the tracks and then using the Combine Tracks tool (GPX -> Combine Tracks…). 6) Combine all of the Track Segments into a single Track Segment by selecting all of the track segments and then using the Combine Track Segments tool (GPX -> Combine Track Segments…). 7) Rename the single remaining Track into a name the Garmin Edge 800 GPS will accept (maximum 15 characters). 8) Save the GPX file with the same name as the Track. 9) Copy the GPX file to the “GarminNewFiles” folder. 10) Turn on the GPS and check that the GPX track loaded into the “Courses” menu of the GPS. 11) Enjoy the ride! Hopefully this helps someone else interested in doing the same! My original review from March of 2015: GPX Editor is the best tool I have found for doing detailed manipulation of GPX files. I often grab numerous track files from Trailforks and other sites when riding my bike in new locations (usually on vacation somewhere). Cobbling these files together is arduous without a tool that can easily add points, delete points, and ultimately merge tracks together into a single track to upload to my Garmin 800 for use as a “Course” while out riding. The developer has been responsive to my requests for new features to make my workflow easier, and for that I am grateful! This app is priced lower than some of its competitors, but definitely punches above it’s weight class.
Very helpful tool with operational problems
Update 6/25: Latest patch fixes the multiple file open bug. Thanks! - Original: GPX Editor has helped me verify the conversion of Google Maps routes to GPX files for use in mobile GPS devices. It’s been great for that. However I can never open more than one file before having to quit the app and restart it. I’m running Sequoia 15.4.1 on a M2 Mac. Google Maps is limited to 10 “waypoints” to define a route. Complex routes have to be split up. To review the GPX conversion it would be ideal to click on a series of GPX files and have them open correctly without killing and restarting. Once fixed my review would be 4 stars. If I could view multiple GPX tracks overlayed my review would be 5 stars.
Doesn’t appear to work with Sonoma 15.0.1
Wont let me save, the editor pops up and just freezes, when I click “ok” it just stops and have to force quit the app.
Crashes due to insane memory usage
Bought this with the intent to clean up a cross country drive track. This app cannot handle large gpx files and just crashes after chewing up 187 GB of memory. Support is just a circular bunch of nonsese - you can't get in touch with the dev. Report issues by clicking the "email me" button below and there is no button. Wasted $ it seems.
There's got to be better
Tried "editing" and deleted a point. Spent time figuring out to use the "-" sign, not a "delete". Wanted to undo but could not find a way. Tried Edit/Undo and that made the tracks worse.
Won't work for me
Won't import GPX data that had been exported from Motion X GPS app on my iPhone. Just wasted $4.99.
Great features, poor performance
Editing files with a large number of trackpoints (32,000) makes the app unresponsive. The app appears to be single-threaded, wasting the power of modern computers.
Nice but Limited
Nice app to view and edit GPX files. Sometimes when I try to select a waypoint on the map, it doesn't work. I'm not sure what's going on there. It would be nice if the app would allow me to select multiple waypoints from the map using a click and drag. Simply deleting extension data is, I think, not the correct solution. I would prefer if the app would save the data somehow. Perhaps schemas for popular extensions could be added to the app.
Buggy !
First experience right out the gate; the file I saved cannot be opened. App complains that "the file has unknown extensions" and must be converted first. Whaaat?? I just saved it with this app! Other wacky stuff: 1. Units of distance are imperial, cannot select metric. (yes I am in USA but I do meter, NOT feet) 2. After removing a number of track points, the speed data for those track points remain in the file. 3. Show boundary turned off doesn't work, boundary still shows. 4. Every track when opens shows the trackpoints (dots) even though I turned them off before. 5. Bottom half display below map is not persisted i.e. I need to select it each time I open a file. 6. Display updates quite slowly; selecting a point in the track or info display takes seconds to update.
It is not working for me
I downloaded this to help plot waypoints for fishng in the Gulf of Mexico. I use a garmin chartplotter which uses the GPX file. I was hoping I could quickly add waypoints in this editor and transfer them by memory card to my plotter. Everytime I try to create a known waypoint in the editor it is showing it way out of place. I tried on several different known offshore coordinates and I get the same results or an error. Most results convert to and show an address in Mexico Beach, FL. It’s like it defaults to an address on land instead of showing the actual coordinates offshore. I tried to use your contact us from your website and that link doesn’t work either, so I had no choice but to reach out to you through this review.
Good Features - Good Price
Does most all the things you'd want a GPS editor to do - and does them simply and well for a very reasonable price.
Title of app is misleading
This app does some things but not others. Be sure you read carefully the help files before buying! One thing you CANNOT do is edit the raw XML .gpx file, and this is disappointing for an app called GPX Editor. Teh raw XML is "read only." You can delete way points and route points, and you can append .gpx files (I have not tested this, but they say so in the help files). The other VERY disappointing thing is the current app will not read and display the <metadata> information as indicated under the File tab. Finally, there is no way to contact the author to get help. Unless this thing does exactly what you need, I would pass. It appears to be a dead app.
Love the concept, major performance issues
Seems like this app has become a LOT worse since I upgraded to OS Monterey and an M1 MAX MacBook Pro. I liked this app a lot on my previous (Intel-based) MacBook Pro, but it has become effectively unusable for me now. I hope the beachballs can be addressed.
Very Good
This app is really powerful and for just $4.99 its an amazing deal. I use this app to view GPS waypoint and track files to help me plan my backcountry biking, hiking and motorcycling trips. Thank you!
Excellent support, great app!!
I use GPX files from my Garmin Explorer to geo code my photos and post routes from hiking/backpacking. This app is perfect for fixing the occasional bad track point, remove unwanted tracks, etc. I had a question on a the app and the developer responded within minutes, and it was evening! The developers apps are well thought out and have incredible capabilities.
Great software crippled by minor issues.
I bought it so I can combine multiple GPS captures into a single clean track that I can share on mapping services. The biggest omission is that you can’t reverse a route, so you can’t combine traces from inbound and outbound trips. You can reverse the order of track points, but the app won’t change their timestamps, so whatever you do next will effectively put them back in their original order. You have to use online services to do the reverse, then manually mess around with time shifting to get the timestamps close so the combined route is contiguous in the correct direction. Other bugs: Operations like reverse track points or manual track point reorder do not update the map. You must save, exit, and reopen the app to see the effect. You can’t quit without saving changes. You must make manual duplicates of your file after every operation so you don’t lose work if the app does something you don’t expect and can’t undo. Undo delete point is broken. The restored point will go to the end of the track instead of where it used to be. Operations like Combine Segments/Tracks are not undoable at all. Selected and unselected track points look the same on the map. You must memorize point numbers and manually select from a list to select a set of points. No rectangle selection. Routes from a GPS tracker easily number thousands of points so this minor omission is a big PITA.
Effective GPX Tool Streamlines Review and Editing
We use GPX Editor to plan, review and edit tracks for our Texas State Parks hiking guides. Accurate track data is critical for the safety of our customers and GPX Editor makes it easy to deliver clear, concise details for the hikes we recommend. The developer is accessible, helpful, and responsive to requests. I wish all apps were like GPX Editor.
Excellent, Useful App
After struggling with editing .gpx files in Garmin Basecamp and numerous other apps, I was searching for a simpler solution. GPX Editor fully meets all my needs and is an efficient, highly useful tool for cleaning up existing tracks (getting rid of wrong turns, etc.), organizing my waypoint databases for different areas, even manually creating new tracks to load into my GPS receiver and ride - or share with others. The interface is intuitive - it only took a short time to learn the fundamentals of using it. I continue to discover more useful features as I use it. Kudos to the developer (William Modesitt) for a great app! Update 05/21/20 - The developer continues to update the app on a regular basis, further polishing the interface and adding more useful features. It would be great if more developers were as proactive and put as much continued effort into improving their apps as Mr. Modesitt does!
This is it: your search is over!
GPX Editor is the best option you'll find, offering clean presentation and archiving of your GPX data, with a polished appearance that's intuitive to use. But best part is Bill (the dev) truly understands customer service, and responds to inquiries and suggestions even within the same hour. As some other reviewer pointed out, that's a rare thing to encounter in program development nowadays, so it's good to know talented people like Bill still exist.
Excellent for editing tracks!
Downloaded the GPX Editor app and was editing tracks within minutes. Very user friendly. I had a couple of questions and emailed the developer and got a response in a few minutes - excellent customer support! The app does everything that I want it to do.
Mislieading description, app doesn't do what promise
No GPX edit. I needed to edit existing GPX file from cyclecomputer. The device stopped recording track at some timee and continiges 40 minutes after withotut me noticing it. Seems easy, ha, you open the app, load the file. And then nothing. You can't really drag the track or add new points to it. If you click at the bottom left, it says something that doesn't actually work. Horrible UX I suggest developer to a) talk to people and learn their need or b) hire someone whoe can do it and improve app's UI and overall UX. It's just super clanky. Not intuitive and learning curve is steep. Requesting refund.
Very tedious to use, would be fantastic with some shortcuts
This would be fantastic if there were some shortcuts around the very repetitive things. For example, when routing through waypoints, you have to double click each waypoint, and some of my gpx files have 10,000 waypoints (so I had to write an automating script to double click each one, and it STILL took an hour). If there were some way to just say "I want all these waypoints in order" that would save me hours. Also, there are certain preferences you cannot control. For example, if you add a waypoint, a pop up menu comes up, and if it's over the next waypoint, you might accidentally open the waypoint in a map. There is little to no official support, because I cannot find answers or workarounds to any questions anywhere online. The user manual is basic at best. I know it's a $5 app, but it's the only thing I can find for Mac that allows you to edit GPX files with a graphic user interface. Some tweaks to make it easier would easily bump this up to 5 stars, but for now, it's very frustrating spending hours shift-cliking and double clicking on a single file.
Disappointed
Very slow. It warned me that it wouldn't like my trace of 8300 trackpoints. Why? That's a pretty typical mountain biking ride for me. I have much longer. The author seriously needs to work on the performance. My GPX recordings contain extensions (heart rate, etc). GPX Editor says it doesn't support them when you try to open the file. OK, but don't choke on it. First time it didn't but then crashed when I tried to duplicate the file. The size of the trackpoint dots is all wrong. The size doesn't change with the zoom, so that it looks all goobery like a kiddy program when zoomed out. Why?
Performance is not good
you must be very patient to use this tool, move a waypoint may need 2-3 sec. (I am using 2019 macbook pro with the 8th intel CPU). Something I need to move multiple waypoints (because they may shifted), this tool can't select all the waypoints I want to move and move together, you need to move them one by one.
Does Exactlly What it Has to
GPX Editor is a very able piece of software. It efficiently opens GPX files, allows you to sort, move, or delete track points, and it does almost everything intuitively - exactly as you would expect. A huge plus: the developer is amazingly quick and complete with support responses. You couldn’t ask for quicker.
Great app and support
I have not needed to contact the developer for anything but new features are consistently added. It is a great tool to manage my motorcycle tracks/routes before usingon my smart phone.
A handy tool to have in your collection
This app isn’t the end-all-be-all of GPS data editing, but it’s useful for the thing that it specializes in: editing GPX tracks. It’s the easiest interface I’ve found to curate collections of lots of tracks. I just got back from a trip where I had multiple GPS units running at the same time and needed to reconcile their data. I did the repetitive work with a Python script, and then cleaned up the results by hand using this tool. It made it easy to split and join tracks and to tweak points by dragging them on the map. The author is quite responsive to feature requests.
Easy to use, very effective, excellent support
I needed a program to edit together many different gpx tracks into complete routes and this program has completely fulfilled those needs. It’s highly intuitive and does exactly what it promises. When I discovered a minor bug, I emailed support and got a response within minutes. A patch was readied within days. And to be clear, I’ve used the program for ~100 hours now and aside from that minor glitch, it has been flawless. 8/26/18 Update - I just wanted to reiterate how fantastic the support is for this product. Once again, when I found an issue that needed attention, the email response was almost immediate and a solution was found in a timely fashion. I’m genuinely impressed by how responsive the programmer is.
Landscape Photographer - Excellent App
I do a lot of hiking and photographing landscapes. I use my phone to track my hikes and then export a GPX file to geo-tag my photos to the locations at which they were photogaphed. I didn’t realize Adobe Lightroom had a 50,000 point max import. This app allowed me to merge every two points to cut my 75,340 points to half so I would be under the 50,000 point import. I was also able to timeshift the points with ease (all 75,340 points). I did contact the developer with a question and he responded same day. Don’t hesitate if you need a little help with GPX files.
A combination of things done right and serious omissions (at least for me)
Right now I’m going to focus on the omissions: It claims the ability to edit routes. What you are limited to is editing the fields for that route (Number, Name, Desc, Comment, Distance) but NOT any of the route points in that route. The 2nd screen shot shows the editing of routes and at the bottom of the list of route points it says: “Route points for info only” What I wanted to do was edit the order of route points, delete a few route points, and change some of the names - none of which I could do. Boo! Done right: editing waypoints and track points! Easy and intuitive with inline editing (which is what I was hoping for with route editing.) My workaround: In GPX Editor go GPX > Convert Route to a Track, then edit the track points, then in a text editor edit the XML file to turn the track back into a route so I can use it as a route in my GPS. I would have rated the app with 4 stars if editing tracks and routes had similar functionality.
Helpful for editing tracks
The developer has been pretty responsive, and this app has more advanced editing features that I’ve seen in the other GPX apps I’ve used. For instance, the ability to add points and interpolate timestamps for those points has been useful when I’ve been trying to repair a track where my GPS logger lost signal. Also, this app has relatively good support for track segments. The biggest downside is that it is very slow with large tracks. When traveling, I generate all-day tracks with new points every second, and these are painfully slow until I zoom in enough that only a modest part of the track is being displayed.
Just what I needed and more
I’ve been using the app for over a year now to manually draw tracks as well as to modify tracks made on my iPhone. It is the only app which has allowed me to get the job done. Recently I contacted the developer regarding a few quirks that I wish were different; the kind of things that pop up when you are working with a trackpad (like accidentally zooming the map while adding points). Not only was the response quick, the developer has worked out solutions. For me, the app is worth well more than the price. Doing my job would be a great deal more difficult without it. The response from the developer alone was worth the price.
Unsatisfactory & unstable replacement for Garmin MapSource
I write hiking guidebooks for a major publisher and make my own maps. I am looking for a replacement for Garmin Mapsource that runs on the Mac and allows me to manipulate GPX files without nagging me about converting them to GDB format. I tried GPX editor, but it is unsatisfactory for my objectives. Most importantly, it crashed within a few minutes of opening. Also, I can’t seem to click on a track and have it pop up in the track viewer; instead, I have to scroll through hundreds of tracks to find the one of interest. I also do some of my cartography offline and I found no feature to download and locally store basemaps for a given area.
Excellent App - Very Functional
This app is nearly everything I want in a GPX editor. A good choice of variosu OpenStreetMap versions (and the requisite Apple Maps), ability to easily view and edit tracks, waypoints, and routes. You can easily edit, delete or add all of these at will, including individual points within. Combining or splitting tracks and GPX files is also very easy. Overall a terrific app.
Mostly unusable
Program is difficult to use and requires internet service to update route changes. Starting a route from a location other than present location is impossible. It would be great to download competed map and plan route changes where internet service is not available. A compass rose to provide magnetic heading within 0ne degree would be nice. Could be a great program, but missing basic navigation tools.

No map based routing...
Yes you can open, edit and save GPX files but there’s no routing between the waypoints just straight lines. Sending to Apple Maps doesn’t really help in this case. I’ll update my review if I find this application to actually provide some basic functionality.
