Addition to my old review: The developer is very cooperative and added a lots of useful features in the new version. The added compatibility to OpenStreetMaps I like best. Thanks a lot for the big improvement. Old review: When I am hiking or skiing in austria, italy or somewhere else I really like to record my tracks using the iPhone (or any other handheld GPS device). It is great for sharing the track with friends or just showing them what I have done. The issue is, at the end of the week you have about hundreds of gps tracks and you need to edit and organize them. Now GPX Editor comes in. It allowes to import gpx files (tracks, waypoints, routes) and allows to merge them. It is also perfect for planning a hike or an adventure. What needs to be improved: - User should be able to assign colors to tracks - user should be able to assign a custom icon to a waypoint, track, route - Start and destination of a track should be visible (e.g. by flags) - possibility to use OpenStreetMaps in addition to Apple Maps All in all I really enjoy using the app and it does what it should do.

I’m very pleased with this software. It’s proving super useful when planning camping trips. I can make up a map with routes, and waypoints super quickly and shre it with a group of people. Also makes editing trip logs really easy. Thanks.

This app may be ok if you are creating or editing very simplistic GPX files. The first time I opened the app I had to force quit (spinning beach ball of death). Upon the 2nd opening I did manage to open one of my smaller GPX files with a number of trails (after watching the beach ball for over a minute) but zooming, panning and selecting trails frequently locks while the beach ball spins making the app unusable. It’s a bit shocking how slow and frustrating the app is to attempt to use running on a top of the line (2015) iMac Rentia i7. If you are considering this app be aware that you will likely need to restrict use to very small single trail GPX files. Also found that I was unable to select trails in order to attempt to export a single trail. Selecting trails segments in the list boxes doesn’t position the view window either so if the performance wasn’t a show-stopper the UI functionatility may be an issue as well. Hopefully the app developer will work on the peformance issues. Meanwhile I’ll have to search elsewhere to edit GPX files.

Yes you can open, edit and save GPX files but there’s no routing between the waypoints just straight lines. Sending to Apple Maps doesn’t really help in this case. I’ll update my review if I find this application to actually provide some basic functionality.

I purchased this software for a use it was not particularly intended for: creating .gpx files from scratch to be imported into my Goldwing motorcycle’s built-in (Garmin) GPS for backroads touring. Most times, if you allow a GPS to provide your routing, it may offer the most efficient route, but not necessarily the most scenic or enjoyable one. In an effort to minimze my superslab (interstate highways) travel, I usually prefer to plan routes for their enjoyment, not how quickly I can get somewhere. I’ve used an online trip planner and mapping tool (web-based) in the past to generate routes and save them to a .gpx file for use on the bike, but it always seemed to be much more of a struggle than it should have been, regardless of which browser I tried. Though, admittedly, my initial attempt at using GPX Editor for this task was not completely successful, it was the most user-friendly and intuitive software I had tried to-date for this purpose. Initially I would have only given this a three stars rating based on the app’s capabilities for ‘my’ intended use, though it should have rated higher than that for most users who are importing GPX track files from an actual GPS unit. Then I contacted the developer, Bill, and my mental tally for this app’s rating immediately increased to a four. At the moment, I cannot recall more helpful and timely responses from a software developer, and I write this as someone who’s been running a full-time Mac consulting practice for seventeen years now! In only four days, which to me is amazing, the features (software functions) that I needed to make this app useful for my intended purpose have already been implemented! I very rarely write reviews, but have been so impressed with this easy and inexpensive solution to a problem that used to take some of the joy out of planning Moto trips w/GPS routings, that I had to offer this review. Yes, it’s a niche product with limited purpose, but for what it does, and considering the developer’s concern for assisting his customers, I have to give GPX Editor FIVE STARS. Keep up the good work!

I am not a novice with computers, but I am very much a novice with making your own way with GPS. As such, I got in trouble right away with GPX. Bill Mosesitt was quick to help me out. As one of the reviewers of the previous edition said “ We’re punching above our wight class here”. I look forward to an enjoyable relationship with Bill’s product.

I’m a contributor to an off road trail mapping site and this application works perfectly to cleanup extraneous track points, adjust waypoints, and add metadata to GPX files. That said, it’s not entirely intuituve to use, the interface could use some improvements, and having more basemap options would be nice. However, the value is excellent, it is well worth the price!

I haven’t left a review for an APP before until now. I have been fighting with Basecamp to edit a GPX file and add some Waypoints. It seemed to have trouble finding the address I wanted to add as a Waypoint. I also use the routeconverter.de website Java app which has always worked well. With that, I was able to search the address and add the waypoint but I had trouble editing the name / description. Within 5 mins of downloloading this app, I had several new Waypoints added to my GPX file and a readable name assigned to each one. Displaying the GPX works well and I can step through each Track easily. Great App !

Program is difficult to use and requires internet service to update route changes. Starting a route from a location other than present location is impossible. It would be great to download competed map and plan route changes where internet service is not available. A compass rose to provide magnetic heading within 0ne degree would be nice. Could be a great program, but missing basic navigation tools.

This app is nearly everything I want in a GPX editor. A good choice of variosu OpenStreetMap versions (and the requisite Apple Maps), ability to easily view and edit tracks, waypoints, and routes. You can easily edit, delete or add all of these at will, including individual points within. Combining or splitting tracks and GPX files is also very easy. Overall a terrific app.

Update (Feb 2016): GPX Editor just keeps getting better. Since last year the developer has added every GPX feature that I need for my mountain biking adventures into this single tool. Here’s my workflow: 0) Download GPX files from Trailforks.com or MTBProject.com (you must be logged in at either site to see the GPX download link). 1) Import the downloaded GPX tracks (File -> Import From File…). 2) Double-click on the “Number” field for each Track and assign each of them a number in ascending order. I like to leave a few gaps between my numbers (1, 5, 10, 15, 20) so that I can easily rearrange or add tracks later on without renumbering all of them when I add a single track. 3) Sort the tracks by the “Number” field by clicking on the “Number” heading. 4) Check the direction of each Track by selecting the track and then selecting the first track point to see if the track needs to be reversed in order to connect to the previous track in the proper direction (GPX -> Reverse Track Points). The last point of the previous track should connect to the first point of the next track. 4.1) Delete unnecessary points at the beginning or end of a track by zooming in on the map and selecting the first point that you don’t want by clicking it on the map (it will now be highlighted in the Track Points list on the bottom right). Now scroll up or down in the Track points list and hold down Shift while clicking on the last point that you don’t want. This will select all of the points between those two points, and now you can click the “-“ button to remove all of them. 4.2) Add points to extend a track by using Shift+Click on the map. You can also create a new track in the Track list using the “+” button and then Shift+Click to add any points you want. This is useful for connecting trails together using a route you create on your own. Make sure to Number your new track so that it’s in the proper order with the tracks you imported earlier. 5) Combine all of the Tracks into a single Track by selecting all of the tracks and then using the Combine Tracks tool (GPX -> Combine Tracks…). 6) Combine all of the Track Segments into a single Track Segment by selecting all of the track segments and then using the Combine Track Segments tool (GPX -> Combine Track Segments…). 7) Rename the single remaining Track into a name the Garmin Edge 800 GPS will accept (maximum 15 characters). 8) Save the GPX file with the same name as the Track. 9) Copy the GPX file to the “GarminNewFiles” folder. 10) Turn on the GPS and check that the GPX track loaded into the “Courses” menu of the GPS. 11) Enjoy the ride! Hopefully this helps someone else interested in doing the same! My original review from March of 2015: GPX Editor is the best tool I have found for doing detailed manipulation of GPX files. I often grab numerous track files from Trailforks and other sites when riding my bike in new locations (usually on vacation somewhere). Cobbling these files together is arduous without a tool that can easily add points, delete points, and ultimately merge tracks together into a single track to upload to my Garmin 800 for use as a “Course” while out riding. The developer has been responsive to my requests for new features to make my workflow easier, and for that I am grateful! This app is priced lower than some of its competitors, but definitely punches above it’s weight class.
